How long is a thermowell?
If you look on most websites, you will see a range of sizes from 100mm to 500mm. Sometimes, however, that’s not long enough. Sometimes, it’s not even close!
This roof mounted thermowell is 3m long! It was manufactured by our partners BKW Instruments, based only a few miles from CHASE HQ in Manchester, England.
Some applications require the thermowell to pass through a thick wall, like the refractory lining in a high temperature boiler. The first metre might be the thickness of the boiler lining and the remaining two meters are to take the tip of the thermowell, containing the temperature sensor, to the bottom of the boiler.
This extra-long thermowell is part of a set to measure the temperature at the top, middle and bottom of the boiler. This allows the plant engineer to monitor the performance of the boiler accurately at all levels.
BKW manufacture thermowells in a range of materials, specific to the temperature and the environment of the application. Stainless steel is appropriate for many applications however corrosive or erosive environments require materials such as Alloy600, Alloy800, Monel, Hastelloy, Titanium or other specialist alloys and coatings.
